CLOGGED DRAIN

(Jer 17:9-10) “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways.

It’s interesting that we as humans try to cover up the wretchedness of our sinful hearts with comments like, “It wasn’t so bad”, or “I’m okay, you’re okay”, or “Man is born inherently good, it’s just environment or hereditary that messes things up.” May God steer us away from this blatant cover-up of the true poverty of spirit that we possess. I think John Newton had it write when he wrote, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” The Bible says we were conceived in sin (Psa 51:5) and that man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward (Job 5:7). Only the Lord knows how wicked our hearts are outside of Christ.

Perhaps our heart is like a clogging drain. We think everything is okay, but little do we know that there is a foul build up going on. Then things start to stink. And after that we have a terrible situation on our hands. When the plumber comes and performs his rooter expertise, we finally get a glimpse of the desperation of our own heart. May the Lord unclog the filth from our life that accumulates, and may He send forth that “righteous rooter” that will thoroughly purge away the dross. This way the living water of His Spirit will flow out as a pure source to a desperately thirsty world!
